ATVX5 (or even4) on Le Potato

I installed v2 originally on the le potato (AML-S905X-CC) and it worked mostly OK. Tried to install v4 and then v5 but same issue on both; successful installation but it boots up to sit at the Welcome screen language selection waiting for input, with all three leds on. I see it via ethernet and can deduce it's IP. It refused all connections. Ive tried USB input devices, mouse, keyboard, air mouse etc, no response. The box itself seems to work OK with various android roms including Aidans ROM, thought is limited by no native BT or wi-fi.

Any thoughts?

After poking it many times I discovered that the usb remote worked for just long enough to select language and name, then the home screen appears and I can navigate through it, then the OTA service is started right after the USB control ceases to function. The display of the home screen continues to cycle through 5 graphics "Try searching for...." forever. Nice looking display. So its alive at some level, but kills usb for whatever reason.
